Juvenile Diabetes
My name is Jasmine Williams and I have been living with Juvenile Diabetes all my life. Juvenile Diabetes is a syndrome that deals with disordered metabolism and high blood glucose levels as a result of a deficiency of insulin secretion in the pancreas.
In other words, my metabolism is unstable and my sugar level in my blood is too high which my body is not creating enough insulin in the pancreas. I was not aware of my condition until later on in my life. There are two main types of Diabetes.
Type 1 diabetes (also called insulin-dependent diabetes or juvenile diabetes) is caused by autoimmune destruction of the B cells of the pancreas which normally secrete insulin. Those patients require insulin injections for survival. Type 2 diabetes (or non-insulin-dependent diabetes) is much more common and results from insulin resistance, mainly due to obesity, with inadequate additional production of insulin by the body. In other words, the pancreas produces a reduced amount of insulin or the cells do not respond to the insulin, or both. I was plagued to have type 1 diabetes. At a young age, I always thought eating junk food with a lot of sugar wouldn’t affect me that much; the most I thought I would get is a sweet tooth, a cavity here and there but, never Juvenile Diabetes
Having diabetes makes life harder than it is already.
I was not aware of the symptoms of Juvenile Diabetes until it started to effect me dramatically. My mom decided to take me to the doctor because I was loosing a significant amount weight. When I got to the doctors office I really wasn’t too scared because I play sports and that’s what I thought was making loose so much weight.
