ADHD stands for Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. ADHD was once called ADD, which stood for Attention Deficit Disorder. ADHD is a medical condition that affects how well someone can sit still, focus, and or pay attention. People with ADHD have differences in the parts of their brains that control attention and activity.
ADHD was first described by Dr. Heinrich Hoffman in 1845, who was a physician who wrote books on medicine and psychiatry. Dr. Hoffman wrote children books, one of the stories was called The Story of Fidgety Philip. This was about a little boy who had attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. In 1902, Sir George F. wrote a series of books in which he described a group of active children with certain behavioral problems, caused by genetic dysfunctions now called ADHD.
Symptoms of ADHD would be not having close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in schoolwork, work, or other activities. Someone who has trouble keeping attention on tasks or play activities. Someone who does not seem to listen when spoken to directly. Someone who does not follow instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties. Someone who often has trouble organizing activities. Someone who often avoids or doesn't want to do things that take a lot of mental effort for a long period of time. Someone who often loses things needed for tasks and activities. And finally someone who is often easily distracted and who often is forgetful in daily activities
ADHD is noticeable in children usually when they are in pre-school. It is estimated that approximately 2 million pre-schoolers are diagnosed with ADHD. It is hard for these children to function and or pay attention. Even though normal children may have the same symptoms they have it at a lower level.
