Laz Dombovic Soc 1. John Fox 9/30/10 Sociological Imagination Assignment The Sociological Imagination, by C. Wright Mills, is the idea that allows an individual to understand the greater picture of oneself role in society. Mills writes, “The sociological imagination enables its possessor to understand the larger historical scene in terms of its meaning for the inner life and external career of a variety of individuals” (Mills 3). How I live, and have lived, has everything to do with where I am from, and what has happened to society while I have been alive. In this essay I will outline my life and three factors biographically and historically that have made me who I am today: economically, educationally, and poverty wise. For my entire life I have lived in Palo Alto, California. It’s a largely White and Asian populated suburbia. There is relatively no crime, and every day of the year the weather stays moderate. It’s a perfect little bubble. My dad is from Slovakia and my mom is from Michigan. My dad immigrated to the states when he was twenty five years old. He had nothing more than a briefcase and fifteen dollars. All he knew was how to fix cars, which eventually led him to come to California. This is where he met my mom. My Mom drove here when she was twenty two to get away from her family, and start one of her own. For my entire life, my mom has been by my side. My parents divorced when I was two, so my mom got custody over me and my brother. I saw my dad once a week at the most, and he had to pay child support. My mom taught tennis, so she made decent money, but my dad’s child support is what really helped us through the years. I had and still have a very strong bond with my mom, she raised my brother and I all those years without too much help. My dad means a lot to me, but he has always been very distant. I never really
