Sustainability is a characteristic of a process or state that can be maintained at a certain level indefinitely. The term, in its environmental usage, refers to the potential longevity of vital human ecological support systems (wiki)
In recent years an academic and public discourse has led to this use of the word sustainability in reference to how long human ecological systems can be expected to be usefully productive, also known as Sustainable Development. The implied preference would be for systems to be productive indefinitely, or be "sustainable."
What the report seeks to achieve
Sd, although a widely used phrase and idea, has many different meanings and therefore provokes many different responses (hopwood et al) . sustainable development and sustainability hold different meanings, the terms are often used interchangeably. According to Barry (2002), Dryzek (1997), Milne (1996) and Wackernagel and Rees (1996) for discussions of differences between these terms.
