The above statement is recorded in the sleeve-note’s for “Music for Airports” (1978) album that effectively launched the sound of Ambient music. This recognizable ability to produce the hypnotic – is now taken to a new level, through the transcriptions done by the New York-based collective: “Bang on a Can [All-Stars]”, in 1998.
Brian Eno’s original album titled “Ambient 1: Music for Airports” (1978), was used to term the style of Ambient music, which previously had been unheard of. The music on the album was unique in that it had the ability to exist, or remain in the background of everyday life. It did so through carefully, and beautifully constructed harmonies and compositional techniques, that Eno composed with tape loops and synthesizer tones – unintended for live performance’s and existence outside of its environmental “function”. His music was meant to color the atmosphere of the location in which it was played; to surround the “listener” on all sides with a sense of spaciousness and depth. A style that was meant to be purely decorative denoted by: quietness, non-developmental forms, repeated “ideas”, layered textures, and a unmistakable desire to depict the vertical color of sound and “open” one’s mind.
The New York based group intended the album to be a celebration of “Music for Airports”, and in composing the transcriptions they were careful to replicate the ideas behind Eno’s originals. With the key difference being the use of live musicians and instruments, which in essence made the album and works noticeably different and accessible to the public.
