Young Couples Starting a Family One of the most important things a young couple should know when starting a family is the importance of prenatal care. You will want to have regular prenatal visits with your doctor. The doctor will monitor you throughout the pregnancy to make sure that you and the baby are healthy. Your doctor will perform routine exams such as, urine test, ultra-sounds, glucluse testing and blood work throughout the pregnancy. You will want to start taking prenatal vitamins that contain folic acid, calcium, and iron as soon as possible. Nutrition and exercise are also very important. You will need additional nutrients to keep you and the baby healthy. You have heard the saying “you are getting for two”, that is not necessarily true. You will want to increase your daily calorie intake by 300 to 500 calories a day. What you eat is more important than how much. Eat plenty of fruits, vegetables, extra protein, whole grains, and dairy, which have lots of vitamins and minerals. Foods that you will want to avoid during pregnancy are uncooked meats and seafood. There are certain fish you want to avoid completely because it may contain mercury which can be harmful for the baby. Moderate exercise can help you feel better and maintain your weight. It helps increase your stamina and strengthens your muscles for easier delivery. You don’t want to push yourself or raise your heart rate above 150, but it is safe to do some exercising. Before doing anything, you will always want to check with your doctor first to make sure it is safe. Things that you want to avoid during pregnancy is smoking, drinking alcohol and taking drugs.
