Why Shop Locally? Why should I shop locally rather than at a big chain store? Well, a dollar spent at a neighborhood store is spent 6-15 times before leaving the community. $1.00 spent in the corner store gives $5.00-$14.00 to the community. When you spend a dollar at a mall, 80% leaves town immediately. So, support local stores and contribute money to your community.
Local owners who have many of their life savings sunk into their business have a natural interest in helping the community. Neighborhood based businesses are essential to charitable efforts, serving on the local boards, and supporting many causes. Yes, there are some corporate stores that give back to the town where they do business, but anyone who raises funds for non-profit agencies will tell you that they get the most from the local retailers. Not all local stores are this way, as well as not all chain stores is bad, but overall the outcome is clear: local stores play a more active role in the neighborhood where chains do very rarely. Some chain stores even undermine community interests.
The growth of shopping malls, because they are not in town, has been controversial. It has a very large impact on local merchants. I will use Wal-Mart as my main example for the pros and cons on neighborhood stores versus shopping malls.
Out of town malls, offer a better shopping experience. It is easier for shoppers to visit a Wal-Mart rather than walk the town shopping area. Wal-Mart (malls) offer access roads that are not congested and plenty of “free” parking. The shoppers better than the street-shopping areas like this. It is also more convenient for shoppers to be able to make their purchases under one roof.
