Managing Knowledge
Those chapter asses the role of knowledge management and knowledge managements programs in business. It describes also the types of systems used for enterprise-wide knowledge management and demonstrates how they provide value for organizations. Describe the major types of knowledge work systems and evaluate the business benefits of using intelligent techniques for knowledge management.
Knowledge management systems have become one of the fastest –growing areas of corporate and government software investment. It has become an important theme at many large business firms as managers realize that much of their firm’s value depends on the firm’s ability to create and manage knowledge.
Knowledge is a firm asset. That is one of the important dimensions of knowledge. The other one is that knowledge has different forms; it could be either tacit or explicit. Tacit knowledge means knowledge residing in the minds of employees that has not been documented, whereas knowledge that has been documented is called explicit. Knowledge has a location, it’s the third important. There is both a social and individual basis of knowledge. And knowledge is situational, which means that knowing when to apply procedure is just as important as important as knowing the procedure. With knowledge, firms become more efficient and effective in their use of scarce resources.
The second important part is the knowledge management value chain. It consist few steps each of them adds value to raw data and information as they are transformed into usable knowledge. The first step is knowledge acquisition – repositories of documents, reports, presentations, best practices, e-mail or developing online expert networks.
Knowledge storage is second. Once they are discovered, documents, patterns, and expert rules must be stored so they can be retrieved and used by employees.
