Interprofessional Education - Essay

This essay will critically analyse the plans for a proposed Interprofessional Education. The appropriateness and effectiveness of teaching and learning approaches will be examined, and the collaborative relationship with other facilitators will be addressed through the literature. A review of the approach used will focus on similarities and concepts drawn from the dominant literature based of health care as there is a dearth available in the field of hospitality.

The field of Interprofessional Education (IPE) is relatively new and there is still mixed consensus over definition of terms. Reeves et al (2009) suggest that “IPE aims to encourage different professionals to meet and interact in learning to improve collaborative practice and the health care of patients / clients”. The Centre for the Advancement of Interprofessional Education (CAIPE) states IPE is “occasions when two or more professionals learn with, from and about each other to improve collaboration and the quality of care” (CAIPE, 2002). These definitions are sufficiently broad enough to include most learning settings (work and academic), and “an inclusive view of ‘professional’” (CAIPE, 2009). For the purposes of this critique the focus of IPE will be on interprofessional education within hospitality disciplines, rather than interprofessional within ‘professional’ groups as is found in health care literature, as professions are not terms used colloquially within the hospitality industry.

Unlike health care, there have been no Government initiatives or drivers from professional bodies in hospitality to implement IPE concepts (Barr, 2007; Department of Health, 2004) and its absence is glaringly obvious in hospitality literature.
