There were many details, events and adventures in his life that were so mysterious that many couldn’t help but wonder whether it was facts or fictions. Herman Melville was born in August 1, 1819, in New York City. He was the third child in a crowded family of ten people which included the eight kids and his parent. His father was Allan Melville, “a well-to-do importer whose business was severely damaged by the scarcity of foreign exchange during America’s first postwar depression” and his mother was Maria Gansevoort Melville. Herman lost his father early in his childhood and this incident drove him to grow up “in an atmosphere of rootless, genteel poverty, shuffling from town to town.” Due to his family situation, Herman didn’t have the chance and the money to go to school and complete his education.
