11 weeks is not a very long time. In fact, in the average lifetime there are over 4,000 weeks. To say that you can’t learn anything important in such a short amount of time would be an extreme understatement. Walking away from this oral communications class, I feel that I have learned so much valuable information for my future success. Oral communications, in my own opinion, is so much more than “just” a speech class. I learned how to communicate with others better in many different situations. An ordinary speech class merely teaches you to stand in front of a group of people and speak your point across. Oral communications teaches you to not only speak to your audience more openly, but know what will help them understand your point more clearly as well. I’ve learned many things from this class. I now understand why speakers get nervous, but that it isn’t necessarily a bad thing. I also learned many new skills and traits to better communicate with any audience. I feel that any college student, no matter what they are majoring in or what college they attend, should be required to take this course. Having the ability to communicate to others professionally is such an important feature in any business professional.
At the beginning of this course, I assumed that we would eventually learn how to avoid nervousness when giving a speech. Tatics such as visioning your audience naked or in their underwear came to mind. However, as it turns out, that was not the case. Instead of learning to avoid being nervous, I learned that nervousness is essential in giving a good presentation. Speakers get nervous for many different reasons. Fear of rejection, fear of being laughed at or even the fear that the audience will just not like you are all causes of nervousness.
