I am a raising senior student at the Metropolitan Campus (MC) of the Inter American University of Puerto Rico (IAUPR) system, a primarily teaching undergraduate institution for natural sciences students. I am majoring in Biomedical Sciences and have a professional goal of becoming a licensed pharmacist, which in Puerto Rico entails obtaining a Pharm. D. degree. In addition to improving my professional outlook, becoming a pharmacist will be a major milestone within my immediate family, being the first to receive a college and professional degree.
My interest in the healthcare field began while I was in high school while taking chemistry and biology courses I became interested in pursuing a college degree which combined aspects of both courses, thus I became Chemistry major at the Río Piedras Campus of the University of Puerto Rico. Shortly after becoming a college student I enlisted in the US Army, in which I have been serving for four years. Most of the commitment that I have for becoming a pharmacist comes from years of service to this country as a pharmacy technician in the US Army. Since 2003, I had the opportunity to serve to soldiers and veterans in the 369th Combat Support Hospital and in Brooke Army Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas. Taking care of the therapies of soldiers coming from Iraq in all kinds of conditions changed my vision radically and definitely motivated me to contribute to society as a pharmacist. After my stint with the Army I returned to college to complete the first part of my training. During my junior year at MC-IAUPR I took the Pharmacology course, in which I was introduced to the study of drug therapy and how it can treat illness and diseases. This course expanded my horizons regarding the full scope of pharmacology and how it can affect people’s lives.
