Despite Sex Education classes within schools, teen pregnancies continue due to not enough emphasis put forth by parents, school systems and the community. Children should have sex education classes and parental guidance sooner in life because they are going through puberty much earlier in life. Research claims unprotected sex and alcohol abuse could be reduced if children receive information regarding these topics earlier in their lives. The report claims, “The gap between when children are developing and coming into adulthood and when adult information is dispensed is the longest it’s ever been.” (Sex Education. (2007, November). The media strongly influences teens’ ideas about sex and related matters. Young adult books on teen pregnancy speak to teens that want to read about true and interesting things. For teens who are dating, considering dating, pregnant, or whose friend is pregnant, young adult literature can be the only method of receiving information and connecting with the experience.
How appalling is the issue? The United States ranks at the top of the list for teen pregnancy and births within the western globe according to stats. Data also reveals the younger a person is when sex occurs the more likely the person is to have unwanted sex. Although the birth rate among teens has decreased slowly and gradually from 1991 to 2005 by 35% for those aged 15 to 19 this only reverses the rise in birth rates by 23% from 1986 to 1991. (Hamilton, Martin, 2005, vol.55) Data can be an influential devise for organizations functioning to advert teen pregnancy.
