Scholarship Essay

Many believe that because we are Hispanic we are not given the opportunity to go to college. Many say, “What do you know about college you are Hispanic, you won’t make it.” But what they don’t know is that inside of me is the urge to better myself and become successful and no one can take that away from me. My parents where both born in Mexico in a place called Culiacan, Sinaloa. My dad never had the chance to go to college because of the little money his family had. Since he was a small boy all he had to do is work, work, and work. “I was only able to go to third grade, but I dropped out to help my family,” he tells me. Now as an older man he wishes he would have gone, “I could have been successful,” he says constantly.
In the other hand my mom was able to go to college and get her bachelors in physiology. To her advantage her family always had it all and was able to pay her tuition. But the only thing that makes her sad is that when she came from Mexico over here she was not able to pursue her career. Now that she is older she is always telling us to do well in school. “I want you to be successful, and be able to achieve all that I never could.” Even as a Hispanic I know that it’s hard at times because of the prejudice and racism there is still. But I will show all of those people that talk bad about us Hispanics that I can. I will make my parents proud and become someone successful.
At times, to me, it seems that going to college is nothing but a dream, a dream so far and hard to achieve. Everyday I see how bad the economy is getting and how my parents struggle so much economically. “Where will I go to college, how am I going to pay for it, how can I do this?” are some questions that race through my head constantly. But even through my families though economic status I can say that that hasn’t stopped me from reaching out to my community.
