I. Introduction
America is known as the land of opportunity; it is the place for many in which they can finally see their dreams come true. This nation, once a very loose confederacy of just thirteen states, has gone through numerous changes to achieve modern day democracy. For every American, it is this fair system of democracy that provides for and allows people to voice their opinions, and create change as they see fit.
Every four years a presidential election, among many other elections, is held. Possible presidential candidates campaign long and hard to show the nation why they should be the next representative and leader of the United States of America. As time passes, major issues of debate for the presidential candidates change as well. In a time of turmoil, the major issues of focus for the 2008 presidential elections are health care, the economy, foreign wars, illegal immigration, energy and the environment.
II. Barack Obama’s Position on
A) Health Care
Health care has always been one of the major concerns for Americans. In a time where technological advances have made it possible to operate on a fetus, and save a person suffering from heart disease, it is hard to believe that nearly forty seven million Americans are uninsured. Many of these people are denied health coverage because of their pre-existing medical conditions, millions more who have health insurance could be dropped as soon as they develop a serious medical problem, and many others who have health insurance are in danger of loosing it because of rising health care premiums.(Tufankjian, pg 42) Health care premiums have doubled in the past six years even though wages and salaries have remained constant; in 2006 alone, two million insured Americans spent more than a quarter of their salary on health care.(Tufankjian, pg 42) Although America leads the world in health care expenditures, twenty-nine other countries world wide have a higher life...
