Farmers rely on pollination for nearly one hundred different types of fruit, nut, and vegetable crops. These pollinators, mainly honeybees, are an extremely important part of the agricultural, and farming lifestyle, as well as our own. Pollination, when pollen from two different plants crosses causing fertilization, is how crops produce. Without this, the US would lose about $15 billion annually through improved crop yield and product quality that honeybee pollination has contributed (Bierling).
The collapse of honeybees would be devastating to crop production, which is exactly what is taking place. A seriously increasing case called Colony Collapse Disorder, or CCD, has been the focus of many. The active ingredient known as Imidacloprid, in Admire, has shown up in hives that have mechanically fallen apart and experiencing this CCD. Admire, as well as other products containing Imidacloprid as their prime active ingredient, are the cause of much of this negative and important loss (White).
The Admire foliar spray, when used to treat for pest insects, travels by wind and spreads; contaminating a much larger area than what needs to be treated. Even without the wind factor, the residue from the pesticide stays on the plans (Royer). During pollination, honeybees travel from flower to flower, collecting nectar and pollen grains.
