Being Unique
Forming a sense of self is a challenge that everyone has to go through. Adolescence is a time of confusion and for sense, even despair. It is hard to go from childhood, content with life, to the beginning of adulthood, a time when all normal things suddenly seem different. The most important reason for adolescence is the chance it gives us for exploration and self-discovery so that when it is over we have the experiences and necessary tools to develop into healthy adults. In order to find our true selves we must go through a series of discoveries and failures. We all go through different challenges in life that eventually form us into the type of people we are today. We can find some examples of people discovering who they are in essays and poems.
At a young age we cannot control the environment we are exposed to. This has a huge impact on who we become. As we get older we are under constant pressure and expectations to become how society views we should be. Society will never stop trying to conform you, as demonstrated in Alice Walker’s “Beauty: When the Other Dancer is the Self.” (Walker 55) Some try to rebel and make their own judgments on how their life should be. This is evident in the Greg Graffin’s “Anarchy in the Tenth grade.” (Graffin 39) As perception on life change, the foundation created in our youth is the mold for who we are going to be in the future. Learning from our mistakes and utilizing them to develop is key for growth and a good future. Finding the skills needed to develop who we are and using them are important to having a healthy life.
When we are born we are pure. We have a clean sole with no sin but then we are subjected to Family, social environment, personal experiences and the media, which try to lure us to be who they want us to be.
