What is opium?
Opium is a resinous narcotic formed from the latex released by “scoring” the immature seed pods of opium poppies. It contains up to 16% morphine, which is most frequently processed chemically to produce heroin for illegal drug trade. In many foreign countries opium poppy seeds are used for food and anesthesia.
American morphine is still produced primarily from poppies grown and processed in India in the traditional manner, and remains the primary pain relief for wounded soldiers. In china opium became popular in the seventeenth century when Chinese people began mixing it with tobacco for smoking. During the International Opium Commission, purified morphine and heroin became widely available for injection. Patient medicines containing opiates reached a peak of popularity. During the early twentieth century opium was prohibited in many countries.
Opium production dominates in Afghanistan, and has increased steadily in recent years to over 66,000 tons a year. Traces of opium have been reported throughout Switzerland, Germany, and Spain. It has even been spotted near ancient burial sites.
Opium was reported to have increased sexual male enhancements and strengthen sperm. Opium smoking became a privilege of the elite, and remained a great luxury into the 19th century. On the other hand, opium was mainly used by men between the ages of 17-35 to “arrest seminal emission.” It was also used by women because they believed that opium enhances the Art of Alchemist. Opium smoking was encouraged by The Ming Emperor of China.
Pure heroin is a white powder with a bitter taste. Most of the world's opium for heroin has been grown in the Golden Triangle of Southeast Asia. However, Latin America is now the primary supplier of heroin to the United States.
