Title: Pandemic Flu
INTRODUCTION
Conquering the spread of the influenza viruses has been the mission of modern medicine and world leaders from time immemorial. The influenza viruses are highly contagious. They influence a lot of people’s lives, in that they are always cognizant of its effects. They cause illnesses that interrupt daily activities, and sometimes lead to death. Influenza viruses killed an estimated 50 million people worldwide in 1918. With advancements in science and medicine, the death toll was 2 million deaths in 1957 and 1 million deaths in 1968. From 1968 to 1969, the death toll dropped further to about 700,000 worldwide and about 34,000 deaths in the U.S. (World Health Organization, 1996).
This paper will define the etiology of the disease, the following terms: epidemic, endemic, pandemic, epidemiology and the dynamics of the spread of influenza globally. These will layout the frameworks for which influenza could be prevented from being pandemic. The ways and means by which doctors, nurses and health professionals can help prevent the spread of the diseases will be discussed.
In addition, the paper will investigate pandemic influenza as a weapon of mass destruction. It will also document other preventive measures for controlling the influenza virus both in the United States and around the world. It will show us how international travel can cause us to be more closely connected than we’ve imagined. Therefore, it increases our risk for contracting certain communicable diseases.
