Cannes 2007

Submitted by apricotsky on March 27, 2008

16:05:07 On the eve of the Cannes Film Festival, the streets in Cannes were rife with celebration. In the erstwhile French speaking silent streets, music and the friendly chatter of English takes over.
The Greeks, the Italians and the Germans were already here. Now come the Americans, British, New Zealanders, Australians and Asians – including Japan, China, Korea and India.
But this time, its pure business, film business. As entertainment rings loud in the ‘Palais du Festival’, the companies ready themselves for attack.
There will be worth’s stated, deals done and critical acclaim sought starting the 16th of May.
But then this happens every year.
What is so special in Cannes 2007?
Its not like any Indians made it to the competition yet. Rukka Dutta does us proud in the Cine-foundation category.
But for once in the pavilions India is represented like never before. Along with the regulars can be seen a 30member strong representation of Indian Independent Filmmakers (IIF worldwide).
There was always CII and NFDC and the Yash Raj and the UTV and the other studios and families. This year however is the largest Indian representation. And not with no avail! Awaited are the Indian films, redefining the market for themselves.

‘It is a process,’ says Irene Pomarze, who has helped Korea plant itself as a film industry on the international map. This year she is helping IIF worldwide, by way of which she assumes she will help put the Indian film Industry on the international map. Releasing seven films at a party on the beach on the 21st, IIF worldwide launches itself internationally.

The festival celebrates its 60th year of independence and this coincides with the 60th year of Indian Independence. The festival authorities recognizing this have assigned 19th and 20th as special India day.
