Abortion is a medical procedure in which a pregnant woman decides to terminate her pregnancy by killing the fetus growing inside of her. There was not a single “inventor” of abortion, but its safe to assume it started sometime in the early 1800’s when doctors began to obtain the knowledge necessary to perform such an operation. Many women wanted to get them because they weren’t emotionally ready for a child, they’d been raped, they didn’t think they could afford one, or perhaps they were too young and didn’t want to tell their parents1. There were many reasons. The procedure was not advertised or otherwise spoken about much because many were so strongly opposed to it2. It was those that were opposed to it that urged lawmakers to make abortion illegal in the 1820’s. Abortions continued in secret for over a hundred years3. After a highly publicized court case (Roe vs. Wade) in the 1970’s abortion became legal by trained
doctors. Since then abortions have become one of the most debated legal and moral issues in the world.
The main reason so many people are against abortion is because they feel that by terminating a pregnancy, you are killing the unborn child. In Christianity, life begins at the moment of conception. With so much of the world belonging to the Christian faith, it is easy to understand how so many are opposed to abortion. Some of the techniques doctors use to kill the fetus are very severe and often very gruesome. Abortions can be done up to the 9th month of pregnancy in some places, which to some, is way too far into the pregnancy to perform an abortion. Those who are pro-life usually believe that a growing fetus is not just a collection of cells, but contains a soul and a heart and therefore should be considered a living, breathing, human.
