It's a fossil fuel. It's burned to release the chemical energy that is stored within this resource. It is formed from rocks which come from the organic remains of prehistoric plants and animals, fossil fuels are found in deposits beneath the earth.
Advantages : - least polluting of all fossil fuels.
- can be used in many different situations(domestic use /heating/ transportation).
- easy to transport.
- cheaper than oil (but prices are rising fast).
-many untapped ressources
Disadvantages : - production controlled by a small number of countries . eg. OPEC/Russia / Norway
- majors producers are not stable democracies.
- output can be manipulated for political ends( eg. Russia & Ukraine).
- polluting... It produces greenhouse gases and it's non renewable.
