“The course of true love never did run smooth,” is stated by Lysander in Act I. In the beginning Theseus and Hippolyta are going to be married in four days under the new moon. Theseus being overjoyed and impatient got Philostrate to create some entertainment for them to pass the time until their wedding day. Then Egeus entered the room with his daughter Hermia as well as Lysander and Demetrius. He claimed Hermia has refused to obey his orders by marrying Demetrius instead she has fallen in love with Lysander. If Hermia does not obey his rules Egeus wants the law to punish her. Hermia is ordered to make up her mind and is left in the room with Lysander.
They discuss the trials that are faced by people who are in love. That is where the quote “The course of true love never did run smooth” comes in. Its meaning is that love is never easy it always comes with trials and obstacles that the two must face. In my own personal experience I have had trials with love. Whether it be arguments, differences, parents, and many other things. Our own personal differences got in the way and love just wasn’t enough.
In this act, Hermia and Lysander are willing to push past the obstacles and have created a plan for themselves to get married. Lysander has proposed to take Hermia to his aunts house which is outside of Athens and there they can be married without being under Athenian Law. Hermia agreed to travel with him and was overjoyed. With their willingness to break every rule and be married they have proven that they’re truly in love. However, their trouble are not over. Helena has the idea to tell Demetrius about Lysander and Hermias plan. She believes if she tells him he will follow them and try to stop them. And if she follows him into the woods she may be able to win back his love. Yet another obstacle for Hermia and Lysander to overcome. Love is never smooth..
