A Lesson Before Dying
After watching A Lesson Before Dying I have gained a new perspective on life. At the beginning of the movie Jefferson was on his way to fish when two of his friends saw him. They talked him into going with them to get liquor. When Jefferson’s friends convinced him to come along I made the connection that his friends represented the devil. For example, Jefferson at first told them no, but he eventually went with them. I believe that the devil will convince you into doing something that you do not want to do. The only way that Jefferson could have overcome the presence of the devil is to have a strong presence of the Lord in his life.
Once Jefferson was on trial for a crime that he did not commit his lawyer kept referring to him as a hog. The reason why his lawyer did this was to show the jury that if they execute Jefferson then it would be like killing a hog. In all actually it did not matter because the juries mind was already set once they found out that Jefferson was black. Miss Emma, Jefferson’s grandmother wanted the teacher; Mr. Grant to teach Jefferson that he was not a hog. When they went to the sheriff to get visitation; the sheriff said that you could not change a person before they are to die. This statement made by sheriff I believe is not true. A person can change before they die. No one knows when they are going to die; even the people who are on death row. If a person is leading a life that is not accepted or harming them and the people around them they have the chance to change. The one thing that they have to do is allow God into their life.
As the movie progressed Mr. Grant was not too happy about helping Jefferson. I noticed that Mr. Grant had too much pride. He let his pride and beliefs get in the way of helping someone that needed it. He strongly believed that no matter how much education someone has they will amount to nothing.
