As US citizens we have all found some type of problem with the system. Whether its having to pay taxes, paying a fine, or not receiving justice. Whatever the reason it is we only think of how it affect us as an individual, we don’t thing of the way it affect us as a community. In the Native American community the government set backs hurts everyone. Two examples would be trust reform and housing are preventing Indian communities form growing.
Years ago the United States government decided that they would be the banker of trusts that were created for the Native community. Over the years the mishandled trusts, have lead to the lost of money rather than gaining funds. Why is it that the government can mange to send out thousands of social security check every month in a timely fashion but can handle trust with the same care. It seems as though the government doesn’t care about the individuals and communities that use and depend on the funds of these trusts. The overall problem with the trust management is that present issues are not being taken into consideration. The government is still thinking of the Native community in the sense of the past. Both the National government and the Indian Country need to reevaluate the way that monies are being handle. I believe that it should be the responsibility of the Indian community to decide how trusts should be handled. They know first hand what is right for their people. The Indian community also has the ability to know what is right for the next seven generations.
I find it amazing how the government has funding for NASA projects and international aid, but many Native Americans fail to benefit from home ownership. In a pervious class I learned that the best type of equity if home ownership. But many Native Americans never get the benefits of home ownership because of the lack of access to mortgage lending.
