Harvey Milk
Harvey Milk led the gay rights movement in San Francisco in the 70’s. He was the first openly gay official elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1977. To many Homosexuals in America he brought inspiration and comfort. His strategy for the acceptance and end of hate towards gays was to encouraged homosexuals to come out of the closet with the premise of if every one comes out of the closet then people will see and realize that homosexuals were not a threat but an essential part of society. Hope was given to gays everywhere.
Harvey Milk began his political start when he moved from New York to The Castro District, commonly known as The Castro in 1972. It would soon become the world's best known gay neighborhood having been transformed from a working-class neighborhood through the 1960s and 1970s with the help of Harvey Milk. He started a business called the Castro Camera in 1973. After he was told by a state bureaucrat that he had to pay a $100 deposit against state taxes Harvey got angry and went to the state offices complaining saying that they needed to get their priorities straight. Milk decided to do something about all the wrong the government was doing and decided to run for city supervisor.
He ran on a socially liberal platform, opposing government interference in private sexual matters and favoring the legalization of marijuana. In 1973 he ran for the position and lost, but he was not far from winning. He won 10th out of 32 candidates. Only the top six were able to run for election. Milk supported the reorganization of supervisor elections from a city-wide ballot to district ballots, which reduced the influence of money and gave neighborhoods more control over their representatives in city government. He ran on a socially liberal platform, opposing government interference in private sexual matters and favoring the legalization of marijuana.
