Other names: Pot, herb, weed, hash, tree, bud, widow, mary jane, chronic, kaya, doobie, keef and ganja are to name a few! There are more than 200 slang terms for marijuana.

Brief history: Humans have been growing Marijuana for thousands of years and using it recreationally since the 20th century. Marijuana was smoked A LOT in the 70’, but Drug Enforcement Administrators say that it is eight times stronger than it was back then. It has become more dangerous now due to the other drugs and chemicals mixed with it to help increase your buzz, so if you buy it…make sure you trust the person.

Prevalence and Incidence: Over 60 million Americans 12 and up have tried Marijuana at least once, Cocaine is second.

Method, Dosage, and Administration: There are many ways to smoke Marijuana. You don’t necessarily have to smoke it; you can eat it or brew it as tea. Some ways to smoke Marijuana is to roll it up in a cigar wrapper (blunt), put it in a pipe (bowl), or an apparatus that contains water in the bottom called a water bong or gravity bong.

How does it effect sport performance? Marijuana has no advantages. It screws with your perception, and it slows down your train of thought. Marijuana increases your heart rate and can cause anxiety or panic attacks. Your motor skills, learning ability, memory, and judgment become effected when high. You also get dry mouth (cotton mouth) when you are high. No one wants to play a sport under these conditions. Some long term effects are psychological dependence, asthma, lung cancer, lower sperm count, and immune system damage. With long term use there is some memory damage.
Is it a banned substance? : HA! Is it? Marijuana is illegal! If you get caught smoking, dealing, baking with it, or have any association with Marijuana you will be in the Slammer, or at least close to it.
