Managerial Competencies

How can the theories and models in leadership and motivation help a manager to do his or her job more effectively? How many powerful tools a manager can use to display good leadership skills, and being able to motivate those around them? Leadership and management although being seen as synonymous do differ, not every manager is a leader and vice versa. But to be a good manager-leader is achievable with hard work and learning the good characteristics of both roles. As a leader, you need to interact with your followers, peers, seniors and others, whose support you need in order to accomplish your objectives. To gain their support, you must be able to understand and motivate them. Like motivation, the search for the definitive solution to the leadership problem has proved to be another endless quest for the Holy Grail in organization theory; however, developing managerial competencies is what can make the difference to become an excellent manager that knows how to lead.

During these past 8 weeks I have learn an extensive variety of information that had helped me recognize my strengths and weaknesses within my managerial and leadership skills. For example I self assessed on teamwork competency, managing an organization, my entrepreneurial quotient, managerial values, and more that I will explain and develop in the paper. To become a successful manager and leader at the same time no simple prescription can be given. But if the good and bad characteristics are acknowledge then is easier to develop a strategy to become the best manager in your field. There are six managerial competencies that one has to achieve in order to fulfill all the requirements of a good manager-leader and those are: Communication Competency, Planning and Administration Competency, Teamwork Competency, Strategic Action Competency, Multicultural Competency, and Self-Management Competency ( Hellriegel, Jackson, & Slocum 2006).
