“Yo te quiero; Tu me quieres. Entonces porque ya no vienes, si sabes que por ti me muero.” Every Thursday morning, those are the first words I hear, they are the lyrics of one of my favorite songs and the ring tone I have set for my cell phone’s alarm clock. My outer ear channels the sound waves from the ring tone to my eardrum. Once it reaches the eardrum it travels to the middle ear and sends fluid to stimulate my cochlea’s hair cells. My temporal lobe, where auditory information is processed, is then alerted by the action potentials that are being fired along the acoustic nerve. Soon enough, I realize that it’s 7:00 AM and I need to get read for my first class of the day.
After sleeping for at least six hours and not eating for another four it is time for food. My hypothalamus directs my maintenance activities such as eating, drinking and body temperature. There are two centers in the hypothalamus that control whether or not I want to eat. The first, the lateral hypothalamus, brings on hunger; the second, the ventromedial hypothalamus, which lowers my level of hunger. The lateral hypothalamus is what regulates my appetite hormones. The hormone that is sent to my hypothalamus is ghrelin and it makes my appetite increase. As soon as my hypothalamus is alerted by ghrelin that I am in need of some food I pull out a bowl of Frosted Flakes and milk and quiet my hunger.
As soon as I’m done eating and getting dressed I need to put on my contacts. I am nearsighted, very nearsighted to be exact. Since I am nearsighted, the light rays from distant objects focus in front of my retina. My occipital lobe does not receive the visual information clearly and therefore I need corrective lens. Once I put on my contacts, the rays of light from the distant objects now land on the retina. The retinal area relays it’s the information it receives to the proper place in the occipital lobe and then allows me to clearly see.
