Kong'S Night Out Review

Oakland University's Meadowbrook Theatre, aims to bring back to life a somewhat bigger than life movie icon from a different perspective. Produced by the Lyric Stage Company and Directed by Jack Neary, "Kong's Night Out" is a half baked comedy that shows us what's going on inside while King Kong is going mad for love outside.

Myron Siegel (Christopher Howe) one goal in life is to not follow in his father's footsteps put on a successful show. But thanks to his rival, Carl Denham (Wayne David Parker), his goal is yet to be realized. Denham will do anything to steal away Myron’s audience – especially on opening night. This time, however, when Denham’s secret “Attraction” drives Myron’s audience away from the premiere of his new show “Foxy Felicia,” it is the last straw. Along with his mother Sally Charmaine's (Cindy Williams) life savings invested in the show and also investor Sig Higgenbottom (Eddie Mekka)threatening to pull his share of the money, Myron has to work fast to keep what is left of his audience and defeat Denham once and for all.

Since this is a comedy, of course nothing goes as planned. As a result, we experience a heavy dose of silly and at time hilarious night of laughs, packed with plenty of twists and turns, door slams and witty banter to keep our attention

But what ends up giving life to the production are the delightful performances by the supporting cast members who at times nearly stole the entire show. In particular, Siegel's giggly, but not as clueless as she seems niece from Buffalo, Daisy (Kady Zadora), who eagerly agrees to help save her uncle's show.

However, it's Jack (Rusty Mewha), the dimwitted fiance of Ann Darrow (the object of Kong's affection) who becomes the crowd favorite. Every entrance he makes is a strong one. And priceless was his impersonation of Kong crouching on a stage. Hilarious!
