Childbirth Experience

Submitted by jlehman71 on April 21, 2009

The child birthing class I attended was held at LaPorte hospital on March 4, 2009. There were three couples present and they ranged in age from sixteen to into the thirties. The young couple appeared to be a lower socio economic status and she was still in high school. There was a higher socio economic couple that had careers as an engineer and a teacher. There was a middle class couple and the man had a career as a union carpenter. I ended up knowing this couple and preformed an interview with them. There was one instructor who was a registered nurse in the OB department at LaPorte hospital.
Topics
This was the very first day of class for these couples. The class started out with introductions and telling if they knew the sex of their baby, if they had a name picked out, had a nursery theme and why they are attending this childbirth class. The middle class mother was concerned about the pain and wanted to know about all the options available to her. The higher class couple seemed to be there to obtain all the information possible about what was about to happen to them. The sixteen year old was concerned about her age and wanted to know the complications she might run into due to her young age. This is the first birth for all the couples and they all seemed to just want to do everything in their power to be great parents. The older couples seemed very prepared as one couple already had the nursery done and I think both older couples had names picked out, while the younger girl was just trying to get through one day at a time. The nurse reassured that all of their questions would be answered throughout the class.
The instructor passed out a folder to all the couples that had information regarding care for a newborn (diapering, feeding, swaddling, safety, bathing, etc.), breastfeeding, colic, childbirth terminology, exercise during pregnancy, true vs. false labor, warning signs that need immediate attention and the stages of labor....
