Aerospace is one of the most advance and fastest growing industries today. Typically the aerospace industry does research, designs, manufacturing, operating and maintenance to vehicles which move through air and space. Today we see aerospace being used in commercial, industrial and military applications. This industry specifically produces aircraft, guided missiles, space vehicles, propulsion units and most related. Most of these products are cutting edge technology.
One of the more common sectors of aerospace is the production of aircrafts or airplanes. The web based system known as DARWIN revolutionized not only the aircraft industry but the aerospace industry as a whole. It was able to shorten the aircraft design and test portion by twenty-five percent. DARWIN produces the results of wind tunnel testing and numeric model executions. It was designed by NASA (National Aeronautics Space Agency) and is currently in its third generation known as the D3. In addition it provides tools and an environment for distributed collaborative engineering. The earlier versions of DARWIN were portrayed by browser based interfaces and a collection of server technologies, such as CGI scripts, applets, PERL, and others. These browsers soon proved to be difficult to control and parts ended up being faulty and hard to maintain. The new D3 model has introduced a pure Java approach to fix these problems. Also with this new version they have extended DARWIN to alternate data domains and be a distributed system. This can allow a single login user transparent access to test results from multiple servers and authority domains.
DARWIN is primarily used on NASA’s aircraft in wind tunnels. Wind tunnel testing places a physical model of an aircraft in a surrounded space.
