A critical evaluation / study is being conducted to determine which Office suite would be more beneficial for our organization. Prior to comparing the various document types between Microsoft’s Word and the OpenOffice.org Writer, I conducted a basic CPU and Memory test. I took notes revealing the version of software and the operating system used to measure the two programs / suites.
OS and software:
• Windows XP SP 2
• OpenOffice.org 2.2
• Microsoft Office 2007
CPU / Memory Comparison Between OpenOffice.org Writer and Microsoft Word
When opening the applications, Word and Writer, I noticed some significant differences in memory and CPU consumption between the two suites. Below is a chart indicating the differences.

First, Office 2007’s word processor’s memory and CPU usage is observably less than OpenOffice.org 2.2’s word processor. With a migration to OpenOffice.org, all computers running this particular suite will notice a significant decrease in production as processing speeds drop.
OpenOffice.org seems to consume more RAM than Microsoft Word to hold the same information. Although Writer contains fewer options / features than Word, it continues to use far more resources.
Second, some of the Writer applications / document wizards appear to require Java Runtime Environment (JRE) and the memory consumption spikes as soon as you begin navigation within the user interface. From information gathered within our organization’s firewall policies, most Java applications, if not all, are blocked in accordance with our security policy. This proved use of all of Writer’s capabilities to be somewhat difficult. Modification to our security policy can take a very long time and testing / verification will be required to maintain our network’s integrity / security.
