Native Teachers And Non-Native Teachers

I have been learning English for more than ten years, and English is always my favorite subject. As a result, compared to other subjects, I would prefer spending more time studying it. In the process of learning this global language, I’ve met several English teachers. What’s more, as an English major student, I have more chances to be with different English teachers. Some of the teachers are native speakers, and some are non-native speakers.
In my observation, these two kinds of teachers have totally different styles and ways of teaching. Also, taking classes with different types of teachers can bring me a fresh feeling. Take two major differences for instance. There is no denying that non-native teachers are better “learner models” to students, for they are learners of English just as their students are. Therefore, they know how to lead the students in the process of learning English. In addition, they can also easily find students’ difficulties in learning and give them a hand if needed or even in advance. If students have problems, they can communicate with teachers in Chinese fluently, which leaves no language boundary between students and teachers.
On the contrary, native teachers are good “language models”. English is their mother tongue; they’ve been speaking the language since they were born. They speak English without problems. Consequently, as foreign teachers, they can teach students a lot of skills of English, yet those methods may not be suitable for all of the students. Students can improve their skills by speaking to or listening to them. The educational system in Taiwan is totally different from the western countries’. Without question, the teaching style from the two types of teacher will be distinct. Students in Taiwan often suffer from the pressure of taking tests and are forced to get good grades by parents or teachers.
