There has been a life long concern on whether the children of today are mentally prepared to one day lead this country. In the past 20 years, children and teenagers have appeared to be on a downfall. The crime rate has increased significantly recently among teenagers. However, all of the blame is being placed on the child. There are other factors that must be investigated when a child or teenager does wrong. Some of the determining factors include school, culture, adoption, and divorce of their parents. In order to prevent future youth crimes, society should take into account the factors to determine the level of punishment the child deserves. Growing up in today’s society children face educational barriers in school. Research shows that most students are academically deficient even taking into account their mental ages, which are typically slightly below those of their chronological age mates (Epstein, Kinder, & Bursuck, 1989). So, children who are mentally challenged are generally not as advanced as those of the same age with normal functioning brain. They function at a grade lower than their age equal. Low achievement and behavior problems go hand in hand; they are highly related risk factors (Lovaas, 1987). Another school factor that can be viewed is social issues. Without social skills, they lack the ability to (1) build social supports and friendships, (2) contribute to peer acceptance and to satisfactory school adjustment, and (3) allow individual to cope and adapt effectively with the larger social environment (Walker, 1995). Social skills teach the ability to (1) build social supports and friendships, (2) respond appropriately to the demands of adults and peers, and (3) adapt to changes in social circumstances.
