A Raisin in the Sun is the first play written by an African American woman that made up to the magnificent Theater’s of the legendary Broadway. It was written by Lorraine Hansberry’s in the 1959’s. Perhaps, due to its triumph a film version was made in 1961. Valid to mention, that the title of this autobiographical play was inspired from Langston Hughes’s famous poem Harlem: “What happens to a dream deferred? Does it dry up like a rising in the sun?”
A Raising in the Sun, new film version aired February 25, 2008 on ABC, was a well written movie as the play. The actor’s, Sean Combs (Walter Younger), Phylicia Rashad (Lena Younger), Audra McDonald (Ruth Younger), Sanaa Lathan (Beneatha Younger) and Justin Martin (Travis Younger), displayed a whole mass of incredible feelings and expressions that appeals everyone thought. Nevertheless, they were all in harmony and full of talent. In this film, they really displayed the difficulties and ambitions of the Black-American families that lived in Chicago in the 1950’s. Yet, they really displayed how hard life was back in those days in which fighting against racial discrimination and inequity was their every day life. Moreover, how for a person of color living and owning a property at any white neighborhood was more than a deferred dream, even with money.
When it comes to this movie, I believe that the family displays morals and values that are respectable and at the same time are good traits to imitate, independently from skin color, economical position or race. With the film, Hansberry tried to show that no matter by what/whom one is judge but that one should always stand up tall with pride for what she/he believe. The moral, never stop to believe in yourself and your dreams, do not let others dream and choose for you. Moreover, it also teaches that no one should put a price on one head.
