"Who watches the Watchmen?" Zach Snyder, “Watchmen” is set in an alternate 1985 America in which costumed superheroes are part of the fabric of everyday society, and the "Doomsday Clock" - which charts the USA's tension with the Soviet Union - is permanently set at five minutes to midnight. When one of his former colleagues is murdered, the washed up but no less determined masked vigilante Rorschach sets out to uncover a plot to kill and discredit all past and present superheroes. As he reconnects with his former crime-fighting legion - a ragtag group of retired superheroes, only one of whom has true powers - Rorschach glimpses a wide-ranging and disturbing conspiracy with links to their shared past and catastrophic consequences for the future. Their mission is to watch over humanity but who will watch over them? The film was a wide release, 20 million shy on breaking the 71million opening weekend take like in the earlier film Snyder did, “300”. The film was number one on the U.S box office and rated one of the best opening for an R rated film. The film setting incorporates historic time era so the viewer can understand to where the film takes place in time disposition. Examples of this are seen with the showing of President Nixon, JFK and the Vietnam War. The lighting was low and dark. It reminded me a bit like “SIN CITY” or “Fight Club”. The actors were not known, but delivered a phenomenal performance. The actors where able to transform externally into these characters, thus, giving the characters life realism. Creating Rorschach ink blot moving on his face was a neat trick. Or the blue glow that emits from Dr. Manhattan seemed real. The plots and gadgets help create the mise-en-scene. The setting seemed like it was copied exactly from the comic book. Watching the film I found myself like a ten year old child watching x-men on Saturday morning.
