Scholarship Essay

Submitted by caseyanne on April 16, 2009

For years I have revolved my entire life around cheerleading and now that it is coming to an end, I am extremely proud of who it has made me. I have decided to build a career from all that I have learned by majoring in Kinesiology and becoming a Physical Therapist. Cheerleading has helped develop my interest in sciences and the human body. Like my coaches and trainers have done for me, I hope to help future cheerleaders condition their bodies correctly in an effort to minimize major injuries.
To me, the most important part of cheerleading is sportsmanship. I believe this because cheerleading was created in order to bring crowds together and cheer for a common cause. To keep sportsmanship alive in the sport, I congratulate every athlete and cheer-on every team at competitions. By doing this I hope to teach younger athletes in the sport that you can be competitive, while still being friendly.
I think that the sole challenge to cheerleaders is we aren’t always considered athletes. Not being considered athletes leaves some poorly trained, without proper instruction, and easily injured. I believe that USASF is well on its way to improving the image and structure of cheerleading. By unifying the rules, properly certifying all coaches, and making safer restrictions, cheerleading will soon be considered a sport to everyone in the world.
Cheerleading to me is more than just a sport; it is a whole separate world. I feel so loved by my coaches and teammates that it seems we’re meant to be a family. In 2006, my brother was in a terrible car accident, leaving him in a coma for months. My coaches and team were there for me every minute. To help me and my mother, my coaches waved gym fees and my teammates helped to find me rides to practice when I didn’t have one. They treated me like I was blood. I owe so much of my personality, strive, and dedication to my team and coaches. The love they have taught me is something I want to share with the world.
