The recent launch of the missile in North Korea brings the issue of sanctions back into the news. The United Nations often follows a procedure of declaring resolutions intended to either prevent countries from some action or to punish countries for an action that other countries consider inappropriate. These resolutions are usually focused on denying the offending nation from receiving certain products or services form other nations; in other words, placing economic disadvantages on the country. While many people believe that economic sanctions are ineffective and may actually cause unintended harm, others feel that sanctions are a preferred alternative to more harsh measures like military involvement. In your view, are there any benefits to economic sanctions, or should the use of them be stopped? As you develop your argument, you should use specific real-world examples as support. Do not limit your essay to the use of sanctions by only one country or against only one country.
TOPIC 2: Since 2001 California has had a law that allows undocumented immigrant students to enroll in California colleges and universities as resident students (AB 540). Currently, there is proposal by Assemblyman Chuck DeVore that would repeal AB 540. If passed, DeVore’s bill would require undocumented immigrant students to pay non-resident fees. Many people want to continue giving resident status to undocumented immigrant students, while many others agree with Assemblyman DeVore. Should undocumented immigrants who enroll in California State colleges and universities be required to pay resident or non-resident fees? Support your position with specific details and examples.
