Effective Communication In Team Sports

“Words are, of course, the most powerful drug used by mankind.” (Kipling 1). This may seem like a cheesy little cliché but it’s very true and not only are words powerful but all types of communication are. Just think if there was no way to communicate with one another, the world would be one very different place. Communication can be broken down into many different categories but the easiest way is to just use Verbal and Non Verbal communication. Each have very different ways in which they should be used and both come with barriers that often need to be overcome in order to be effective. One place in which communication is used very often is within sports and especially team sports. Effective communication plays a great role in determining the success of a sports team.
Non Verbal communication is the most used type of communication because it’s often unintentional. Non Verbal communication consists of many things like facial expressions and hand gestures which are often tools used in team sports. Therefore non verbal communication plays a major role in determining the outcome of all sporting events. If the coach is not able to get all the players that are in the game all working together the chances of winning decrease. But if the coach can flash a quick hand signal and instantly the whole team knows exactly what they are supposed to do, the chances of executing are much higher. One of the most important jobs of a coach is to divise a strategy for the game and as the game unfolds the coaches strategy must be reinforced and altered. One of the ways to alter and reinforce strategy is by calling a time-out and talking to his players, but a coach can only call so many time-outs. Using signals a coach can give his players his expert advise instantly without saying a word and at the same time reinforce the strategy he wants executed.
