Malathion is seen as something that would be harmful to citizens of the town, but the West Niles Virus is just a fatal of something to fear. In either of the situations we are talking about whether or not the decision that is made is going to be in the best interest of the town members and the tourist that our town so desperately needs. After looking over the information and making some notes about Malathion in the areas of hazard identification, dose-response, exposure, and risk characterization there is enough data to draw a solid conclusion. As a result of the research I have opted to allow the Malathion to be sprayed, but there will be some stipulations to this agreement.
The hazard identification test showed that many test had been done which showed that if handled correctly there would be very little health issues with the surrounding citizens of Genericville. In the Agency for Toxic Substances & Disease there were test and observations both relative to humans and the environment where Malathion was sprayed. In all of the findings there was nothing that deemed permanent. Don’t get me wrong if there is exposure depending upon the amount can have some symptoms, but none led to fatalities. In regards to the observation that occurred in Florida there were assessments made during the first 5 weeks of spraying, the 2 weeks before spray, and the 7 week period the year before. During this time there was no increase in trips to the hospital or people complaining of pesticide poisoning. There was no increase in fetal loss, low birth weight, or birth defects. There were some cases of hypersensitivity reactions to Malathion or among 10 people who developed slight dermatitis within a week of exposure. There were even tests on genes and there were shown to be no mutations or abnormalities found. Of course many people say that the doses probably were not high enough.
