“Kilowatt Ours” is a documentary film that takes viewers on a journey from the light switch to the sources of America’s electricity, exploring the great environmental problems and consequences that result from coal and nuclear generated electricity. To prevent global warming from furthering itself, a couple in the film shows the viewers how they can help to conserve energy in the comforts of their own homes.
“Kilowatt Ours” is a film designed to teach the general public where electricity comes from, why it is important that we reduce the amount of electricity we use, and practical steps we can take as individuals and organizations to cut our electrical use. Examples of important energy savings are seen from the filmmaker’s own apartment, homeowners, school districts, cities, and large businesses. The film advocate connections between an average homeowner's electrical energy use and adverse health and environmental impacts, such as mountain top removal coal mining, global warming, and asthma. The film conveys the actions that homeowners, businesses and communities can take to save money by saving energy and reducing their demand for energy.
I would highly recommend the film “kilowatt Ours” to my peers so they can garner the benefits of energy saving techniques and be aware of the oblivious harm they are producing every time they flicker on the light switch. According to the film, Homeowners can cut up to sixty dollars off their electricity bill by changing all their light sources in their homes from bulbs to fluorescent. Thanks to technology fluorescent lighting generates 40 to 60 watts of electricity, compared to the normal light bulbs which generated 200 watts of electricity. Small towns and cities are also being more environmentally conscious, implementing a brand new change of traffic lights by implementing LED lights at every intersection which is more cost effective and energy efficient.
