Description of a Familiar Room

Long–legged palm trees, green cycads, and an assortment of red and yellow cannas surround the Hallandale Beach Library. At the entrance of the room, a quiet small information desk faces the people that come through the crystal sliding doors. Returned books and DVDs overflow the information desk’s counter. A large picture of the library welcoming the customers in English, French, and Spanish hangs on the khaki wall above it. A giant beige carpeted chamber with khaki walls and wide windows circles the computer courtyard, the enormous metallic shelves filled with books, and the silent reading area. A quiet and cold atmosphere surrounds this room.

On the right, a polished large oval wooden table surrounded by dark grey cushioned chairs holds the flat silver monitors of the computer courtyard. Wireless black keyboards and grey mice sit on the side of each monitor. Shiny flat screens reflect the faces of the computers’ users. The room is quiet with the exception of the soft typing sound of keyboards and the mice double clicking.

Next, in the center of the room a dusty perfume and an aromatic vanilla-like smell escape from the pages of thousands of books that fill the giant goldenrod painted metallic shelves. Two small round wooden tables with two sets of beige cushioned chairs sit between each shelf. A quiet squeaky sound comes from a cart filled with returned books. A librarian stops the cart and the sound disappears.

On the left of the room, in the reading area the sun streams through the large glass window. The gold sunlight covers the small wooden coffee tables and the beige sofas. Facing the small coffee tables, a gesture of silence expressed in a large picture of a woman with her index finger placed in front of her closed lips hangs on the khaki wall. Glossy magazines and grey newspapers cover the small octagonal wooden table on the corner of this area....
