Mammals
For my mammal classification I chose the Vampire Bat (Desmodus Rotundus) and the Northern Night Monkey (Aotus Trivirgatus). Some traits shared by the species I chose are that both species are very family oriented. While the female Night Monkey gives birth and feeds the infant every two hours the male is actually the one to take care and protect the infant in the family due to the large size of the baby at birth. Within the Vampire bat community the individual colonies take care of each other as well. When the female gives birth the infant will not be weaned for up to 9 months before being introduced to the regular diet of the blood of animals. Both the Vampire Bat and the Night Monkey like to be in higher elevations (1995-2008).
One of the differences between the Vampire bat and the Night Monkey is that even though they both like high elevations they do not like the same climate. The Vampire bat likes to live in the South American tropics and subtropics and can survive in humid as well as arid conditions. While the Night Monkey cannot tolerate such high temperatures it will stay 3600 feet above sea level and tend to stay in rain and cloud forests. Another difference between the Vampire Bat and the Night Monkey is that the Monkey will mate for life while the Vampire Bat will choose a different mate each season but still keeping it within its own colony (1995-2008).
The Vampire Bat belongs to the order of Chiropetera and the Night Monkey belongs to the order of Primates. Each has its own order due to the differentiation of the species within the same phylum. Two other mammals that are in the same order are the Lemur and the Bumble Bee Bat.
Insects
The insects I chose were the Click Beetle (Alaus Oculatus) and the Black Widow Spider (Latrodectus Mactans). The Click Beetle can be found from Quebec to Florida along the eastern states as well as West from Texas to South Dakota. The Black Widow Spider can be found all over...
