Addiction has become a very serious health issue and problem in the US and is still on the rise today. Addiction is defined as the need for a person to indulge in something that may or may not have negative consequences on the person’s physical or mental health and their social state. There are many different forms of addiction, some that are much more physically harmful than others. Treatment options, which are available in many different forms, are also in abundance in the US for people with addiction problems.
The most common form of addiction that we hear about today in the US is drug addiction, along with alcohol addiction. Along with these two common types there is also many more such as sex, gambling, nicotine, caffeine, and even shopping. People who suffer drug and alcohol addiction suffer many more physical health problems of those are addicted to shopping, but shopping addicts suffer from mental issues and their social state is usually very impacted. Any substance or behavior that is used repetitively despite the known damages it can cause on the user or other individuals in their life is considered an addiction.
There are many different forms of treatment available for addicts. Depending on what the person has an addiction to and how severe the problem is determines what type of treatment would be best suited for that individual. Treatment options can be in-patient or out patient and can consist of a short thirty-day stay and some can involve months of in-patient treatment accompanied by follow up sessions after the initial rehabilitation. Some treatment options also include actual medicine that is taken after release from the facility to curb the need for the substance or behavior. Behavior modification is the most important aspect of any type of treatment no matter what the addiction.
