A Moral Obligation

John Locke was a 17th century English philosopher whose ideas formed the foundation of liberal democracy and greatly influenced the American and French revolutions. His contributions included the theory of knowledge, empiricism, which addressed the limits of what we can understand about the nature of reality. His lasting political insights included the notions that all people are born equal and that education can free people from tyranny. Locke believed that a government has an obligation to ensure that an individual’s rights were always preserved, including the ownership of property. Locke also philosophized that the government has a duty to protect the life, liberty and property of its citizens. This philosophy influenced the foundation of the United States Constitution and has been used by our government and a guide to how it treats its citizens.
Locke’s philosophy of “life and liberty” is directly stated in the US Constitution. Most of the first ten articles in the constitution directly deal with the US government and citizen relationship.
