Jane Austen, (Little Jenny), has died at her Winchester home, July 18th. She was 41. The cause of death was phthisis. She finally passed away with her head cradled on a pillow on her sister Cassandra’s lap. Jane had been ill for 12 months and had given up writing in March.
Miss Austen was born in Steventon, Hampshire, December 16th 1775, to Reverend Austen who died 1805 and Mrs Cassandra Leigh Austen. Miss Austen was sister to James, George, Edward, Henry, Cassandra, Francis and Charles. Miss Anne Sharp was her closest friend. Miss Austen did not marry and had no children.
Miss Austen was educated at home till the age of 7 when she, along with her sister, attended Mrs Latournelle’s School, a boarding school in Oxford, until she had to return home due to illness. She and her sister then attended The Abbey School in Reading until 1786 from where she returned home to her parents till she was 25. She started to write at the age of 14. One of her first pieces was a novel called The Watson’s. This was never completed.
Her greatest accomplishments were the novels Sense and Sensibility, originally titled Eleanor and Marianne, Pride and Prejudice, originally titled First Impressions, Mansfield Park and Emma, all published under the pseudonym “by a lady”.
The Prince Regent was a great admirer of Jane Austin’s novels and she was invited to his London Residence, Canton House. Jane later dedicated the novel Emma to The Prince Regent.
Two more novels, Northanger Abbey and Persuasion will be published later this year.
Jane has an incomplete work, Sandition that was to be renamed The Brothers.
Jane Austen enjoyed dancing and attended many balls. She also enjoyed long country walks with friends. Her mother, Cassandra, her brothers, James, George, Edward, Henry, Francis and Charles and her sister Cassandra, survive her.
