Pandora’s Personalization Re-invents Radio
To capture the essence of music at the most fundamental level, the Music Genome Project created Pandora internet radio; the most comprehensive analysis of music ever. Pandora guides users through their favorite parts of the music universe via hundreds of innovative DNA/genre-like attributes. Powered by the Music Genome Project, Pandora reinvents radio with its unique interface creating ideal circumstances for ambitious indie artists to become recognized; however, legal issues threaten to dampen their bright future.
Essentially, Pandora is a free, online radio Flash player that allows you to discover new types of music and retrieve your known favorites. Anyone can join for free by providing an e-mail address, username, password, and zip code. Your e-mail address is used exclusively for sign-up confirmation and in case you forgot your password. You are allowed to make and save up to ten stations before you sing up. The focal point of the radio player is its stations which are grouped in a scroll box on the left. To create a station all you have to do is click the, “Create a New Station…” button, which is located on top of the stations’ scroll box. Then, simply type in the name of your favorite band or song and press enter. The initial song or artist selection, will set itself, by default, as the stations name. From your selection, Pandora reaches into the Music Genome Project’s vast database of songs, and selects ones that are most similar to your selection (Machrone 60). This is the point when personalization comes into play, and to do this one must communicate to the radio their likes and dislikes. The player gives an option of “Thumbs up” or “Thumbs down” for your preference selection of each song.
