In the reading “The End of History” by Francis Fukuyama, Fukuyama argues that perhaps with the end of the cold war, the triumph of Western ideology, and the spread of Western culture perhaps the evolution of man’s ideology is over. Although there will still be news concerning international relations because this Western Liberalism has only begun to control the idealistic aspects of international relations not the realistic or material world. Fukuyama talks about the achievements and contributions of Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel. Hegel was the first modern social scientists basically. He contributed to the Marxist theories and to the theories concerning the evolution of man from primitive to democratic societies. Hegel saw the fall of Napoleon as the end of history. Fukuyama describes the states that will emerge at the end of history. The characteristics he sees that it will have are that it is democratic and exists only with the consent of the governed. According to Hegelian idealism history is driven by contradictions. The first level that these contradictions exist is in the realm of human consciousness in the form of ideas. These ideas include religion, culture, and morals. Another important aspect of Hegelian idealism was the distinction between the ideological world and the real, material world. Hegel believed that the material world is rooted in a prior state of consciousness. This consciousness developed from the previous material world and will play a role in determining the current material world. Many modern thinkers do not support Hegel’s theories. Marx denied the idea of the real and the ideal all together. Marxism believes that the ideal world is completely controlled by the material. Anti-Marxists are also materialistic bias. The “Wall Street Journal” side sees man as a rational and profiting individual. Fukuyama does not seem to support this materialistic point of view.
