The goal of a revolution is to overthrow a government and replace it with another. The major similarity was due to taxes. The American revolution started because the colonist wanted to break away from the Britain’s rule because of taxes, power and trade regulations. The French revolution started because the French nobles, peasants and Bourgeoisie wated to break away because the people wanted more power, they wanted to overthrow the monarchy and to change the tax system. Although the American and French revolutions were 14 years apart they had similarities and differences.
Both revolutions were started mainly due to the tax system. After the French and Indian war, the British government acquired a huge amount of debt. They wanted to tax the colonist more because they wer the ones who helped the most from the war. American’s had always been taxed but they didn’t want their money to go to the British. The government taxed imported goods, they required a revenue stamp be put on legal documents and newspapers. They colonist showed their disapproval by destroying the stamps and resorting to violence.
Due to the seven year war and American Revolution, the French Government was in a huge debt. The French rebels copied the American Revolution and used the idea of “taxation without representation.” The nobles refused to cooperate and pay taxes like the rest of the people in France.
Thomas Jefferson helped create the Declaration of Independence which declared America independent from Britain and also laid out the government and American society. Of course George Washington was a key player during this time as well. Washington’s constant persistence to never back down from the British was the reason why America won. Washington later became the first president of America and believed that a country should be run by a government by the people and for the people. As for the French, well they weren’t so lucky.
